Cold Water Dyes - Microwave Dyeing
Some stuff about microwave dyeing...
- Microwave dyeing is only compatible for use with Cold Water Dyes.
- Small volumes can be dyed easily in a microwave
- Note - this makes microwave dyeing a particularly good method to use when tie-dyeing a small item, such as a t-shirt, as the weight is often quite small when tie-dyeing).
- Microwave ovens can not have metal put inside them, so you will need to remove any metal clasps or other accessories incompatible with microwave oven use before dyeing anything in a microwave
Follow the normal preliminaries...
Dyeing the garment
- Transfer the dye bath to a microwave compatible bowl.
- Add the wet fabric, ensuring it is fully submerged.
- Place the bowl into a large plastic bag, and seal it with a rubber band.
- This is so that if the pressure builds up inside the bag during heating, the rubber band can stretch and release the excess pressure, like the valve on a pressure cooker.
- Put the bowl inside the bag into the micro-wave oven
- Set on high for three (3) minutes.
- Leave to stand for a further three (3) minutes inside the microwave.
- Allow to cool.
- Remove from the microwave oven
- Remove the bag
- Move the fabric about to ensure an even distribution of the dye mixture (and thus shade)
- Place the bowl back inside the bag
- Return the bowl inside the bag into the microwave
- Set on high for a further three (3) minutes.
- Leave to stand for a further three (3) minutes inside the microwave.
- Allow to cool.
- Remove from the microwave oven
- Remove the bag
- Pour out surplus dye
- Rinse until the water runs clear.
- Wash with warm water and washing powder.
